Redfern Speech Memorial
Twenty five years ago in 1992, then Prime Minister Paul Keating gave a speech in Redfern Park to honour the International Year of the World's Indigenous Peoples. In that speech he acknowledged and accepted some of the atrocities that were committed in Australia towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
It remains one of our nation's great speeches. It is a reminder of how much work there is to achieve reconciliation.
At the moment a small fragment of the speech is displayed. We should adequately mark it in the place it was given, Sydney's Redfern Park.
We call on the City of Sydney to work with the local indigenous community to design and construct a more appropriate commemoration.
